How a common man
can conquer desires

Query: Kindly explain how a common man can conquer desires and lead life of a house holder and at the same time work towards Union with God.

Every human being has to lead two lives simultaneously. One the physical life controlled by the Ego and the second, the spiritual life governed by I of the innerself, atman the soul within. We may desire or not but inherently we worship the Omnipotent Creator be it in the form a ritual or reading of Sacred texts.

We seek the blessings of the Creator to keep us away from the unknown happenings which may retard our physical journey. The fear of the unknown takes us to the temples, churches and mosques.

What ever profession you have undertaken... you would want to be a great success in your field and simultaneously want to pursue the Spiritual quest.

The physical journey is best guided by the character of Rama and hence we must read Ramcharitmanas for no human being can ever rise above what maryada purshottam Rama was. Leave apart the Spiritual inclination of Rama, he was the king of Ayodhya par excellence. None could beat him in his time.

You must devote your self exclusively to your Profession. Maintain total integrity, honesty, sincerity coupled with hard work. This shall give you satisfaction as a human being.

Apart from your profession ... your Spiritual quest would be satisfied if you read sacred literature along with biographies and autobiographies. Books on Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Ramana Mahirshi would give a great impetus to your quest. Don't fall into the ritual of going to a Temple.

Seek the company of knowledgeable people who have either seen God or Realized God. Clarify your Spiritual doubts. Read only Bhagavad Gita at this stage. Bhagavad Gita available from Gita press, Gorakhpur would suffice your requirements. Do Satsangs only with like minded people. Do not ever enter into Spiritual gossip as is the trend the days.

As you alleviate yourself even more profound questions would face you. For any query of which you think you do not have the proper answer ... put up the same on this mailing list and I shall address to each and every query of yours. As you proceed on this journey I shall release those gems of the Spiritual Doctorine which you shall never find in any book.
